Tribute to Hergé fresco by Mezzo in Laeken

Mural art realized by Mezzo, the creator of the King of the Flies comic strip illustrations as a tribute to Hergé. Mezzo of his real name Pascal Mesemberg was born in Drancy in 1960. At the age of 17, he began his career by sending illustrations in various magazines and graphzines Paris where he published his first comic strip in Métal Aventure and then collaborated with Zoulou and L’Écho des Savanes. After becoming famous working with Michel Pirus in 1989 he moved to Paris where he contributes regularly to the journal de Mickey as an illustrator and realizes the covers for Stephen King’s Librio collection novels. He also still publishes short stories in L’Écho des Savanes with his accomplice Pirus.

Cimetière de Laeken

The Laeken cemetery is the oldest of all the cemeteries in Brussels still in function. Very popular among tourists and residents alike it’s often dubbed as the little brother of the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. The Cimetière de Laeken rose massively in popularity when the Royal family chose the adjacent Notre-Dame de Laeken Church as their burial grounds. Since then it became the final resting place of Belgian’s rich and famous Personalities bringing some outstanding examples of 19th century funerary art. By looking at the titles engraved in the stones one notices profusion of ministers, mayors, advisers, renowned artist or high ranking officers.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday: 8:30AM – 4:30PM

Notre-Dame de Laeken

l’Église Notre-Dame de Laeken (Our Lady of Laeken Church) is well known as the official burial place for Belgium’s kings and queens. The Construction of this church began in 1854 to honor the memory of the first Queen of the Belgians Louise-Marie, who died in 1850.

The architect J. Poelaert was chosen after a competition was held, but he resigned from the project in 1865. This led to many interruptions in building work, which was finally restarted between 1904 and 1911 by his fellow architect von Schmidt from Munich.
With the assistance of the architect Groothaert, von Schmidt built a new facade in front of the first one and completed the towers and steeple. The royal crypt, the windows and furnishings with their Gothic character make the church one of the most important Neogothic buildings in the region.

Monument A nos héros de 1914-1918 in Laeken

Monument dedicated to the Heroes of the First World War in Laeken. The statue features a Woman, symbolizing the Motherland holding a sword and shield with at it’s base engraved in stone the words “Souvenez Vous” meaning in English Remember. The names of all the inhabitants of Laeken who died during the conflict are also engraved.

Lincoln, is a popular French comic strip created by Jérôme, Olivier & Anne-Claire Jouvray which portraits the theme of the lonely cowboy. The main character Lincoln is a lost soul drifting across the country without any purpose in life. One day God crosses his path and promising him happiness and immortality sets him on a mission to uphold justice.
